Team Leader – Management Accounting and Payroll

  • Full time role
  • $59.39 per hour + superannuation

 

Wodonga City Council is seeking an experienced, collaborative and detail-driven finance professional to lead our management accounting and payroll functions.

Reporting to the Manager Finance, this role plays a key part in ensuring the integrity of Council’s budgeting, long-term financial planning, asset accounting, payroll and taxation obligations. You’ll lead a small, high-performing team and work closely with stakeholders across the organisation to provide accurate, timely and trusted financial advice that supports Council’s strategic objectives and community outcomes.

 

Key focus areas:

  • Budgeting, Long-Term Financial Planning and Financial Insight
    Lead the development and ongoing monitoring of Council’s annual budget and long-term financial plan. You’ll review actuals, manage variations, prepare clear financial commentary, and support informed decision-making through monthly and quarterly reporting.

  • Asset Accounting and Capital Program Support
    Oversee asset accounting in collaboration with the Assets and Projects Team, including capitalisation, depreciation, revaluations and disposals. You’ll help maintain a rolling 10-year capital program that complies with legislation and accounting standards and feeds accurately into Council’s long-term financial planning.

  • Payroll and Taxation Governance
    Ensure the accurate, compliant and timely processing of payroll and taxation obligations. This includes interpretation of Awards and Enterprise Agreements, statutory reporting (including Single Touch Payroll, BAS and FBT), reconciliations, and providing expert payroll and taxation advice to internal stakeholders.

  • People Leadership and Capability Building
    Lead and develop the Finance Business Partners (Budgets and Assets) and the Payroll and Taxation Administrator. You’ll foster a culture of trust, accountability and continuous improvement while supporting financial literacy across the organisation.

  • Audit, Compliance and Continuous Improvement
    Support interim and year-end external audits, maintain strong internal controls, and drive improvements to financial systems, processes and documentation to enhance efficiency and governance.

 

What we’re looking for

We’re seeking a capable finance leader with strong technical expertise and a collaborative, service-focused approach.

You’ll bring:

  • Proven experience in management accounting, budgeting and payroll within a complex or regulated environment
  • Advanced knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and relevant legislation
  • Strong capability in financial analysis, reporting and long-term planning
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing finance professionals
  • Clear, confident communication skills with the ability to translate complex financial information for non-financial stakeholders

Qualifications and requirements include:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Accounting, Finance or a related discipline
  • Membership (or significant progress toward membership) of a recognised professional body (CA, CPA or equivalent)
  • Current driver’s licence and National Police Check (or ability to obtain)
