Wodonga Council is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Senior Strategic Planner to play a key role in delivering planning projects that guide how our city grows and evolves.
Working within the Strategic Planning team, this role provides technical expertise and project leadership across major initiatives including land rezoning, growth area planning, planning scheme amendments and Developer Contribution Plans. You’ll work closely with internal teams, government agencies, developers and the community to ensure growth is well-planned, sustainable and aligned with long-term infrastructure and community needs.
Key aspects of the role
- Strategic planning and policy delivery
Lead and contribute to strategic land use planning projects, including growth area planning, structure plans, housing, heritage and open space strategies. You’ll prepare and implement policies and planning scheme amendments that support Wodonga’s future growth.
- Project management and technical expertise
Manage complex planning projects from concept through to delivery, including overseeing consultants, preparing reports and ensuring projects meet legislative, quality and timeframe requirements.
- Collaboration and stakeholder engagement
Work closely with internal Council units, landowners, developers and government agencies to coordinate planning outcomes. Facilitate consultation and engagement activities that ensure diverse voices are considered in strategic planning decisions.
- Advice, reporting and advocacy
Provide high-quality strategic planning advice, prepare Council and Planning Panel reports, submissions and funding applications, and represent Council confidently at meetings, forums and workshops.
What we’re looking for
An experienced senior strategic planner with strong technical capability and a practical, delivery-focused mindset. You’ll bring a solid understanding of land use planning and planning legislation, experience managing complex projects, and the ability to work collaboratively with internal teams, consultants, government agencies and the community. Strong communication skills, sound judgement and a commitment to positive community outcomes are essential.
To succeed in this role, candidates will demonstrate:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in planning, urban design, environmental management or a related field
- Substantial experience in strategic and/or statutory planning, ideally within Victorian local government. Previous experience in the preparation and processing of Planning Scheme Amendments and knowledge of ATS system is desirable.
- Strong knowledge of planning legislation, land use planning frameworks and development processes
- Proven project management experience, including managing consultants and complex timelines
- Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills
