Team Leader Strategic Planning

Play a key part in guiding Wodonga’s sustainable growth. As Team Leader Strategic Planning, you’ll lead a small, skilled team delivering strategic planning projects that shape how our city evolves - from structure planning and rezoning to environmental policy and growth area coordination.
Your work will ensure development aligns with community values, environmental sustainability, and long-term infrastructure needs, particularly across major growth areas such as Leneva-Baranduda and beyond.

 

Key aspects of the role

  • Strategic leadership in growth and sustainability
    Lead a team responsible for the preparation and delivery of land use planning strategies, planning scheme amendments and environmental policy initiatives that support Wodonga’s long-term growth. Ensure integration of research, design and community input to inform well-founded and future-focused planning outcomes.

  • Project delivery and technical excellence
    Oversee multidisciplinary planning projects, from concept through to completion ensuring alignment with legislation, timeframes and quality standards. Provide expert advice across planning scheme amendments, environmental policy, and sustainability initiatives.

  • Collaboration and partnerships
    Develop strong relationships with developers, consultants, agencies and internal stakeholders to align objectives and drive cohesive project outcomes. Works collaboratively to find balanced solutions that benefit both community and development needs.

  • Team development and leadership
    Guide and support a team of professional planners and sustainability specialists. Builds a culture of accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement through clear direction, feedback and professional growth opportunities.

  • Community and stakeholder engagement
    Lead meaningful engagement processes that give residents, landowners and partners a voice in Wodonga’s future. Represent Council confidently in public forums, workshops and inter-agency discussions.

A strategic thinker who can balance vision with delivery, and who thrives in a collaborative, community-focused environment. The position suits someone confident working across complex planning frameworks and passionate about shaping sustainable urban growth.

To succeed in this role, candidates will demonstrate:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in planning, project management, urban design or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience leading or contributing to major strategic planning projects in local or state government.
  • Strong understanding of planning legislation and urban growth frameworks .
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building and negotiation skills.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop a team within a values-based organisation.
