Join Wodonga Council as a Risk and Assurance Officer and help drive strong governance, risk management, and compliance across the organisation. You'll coordinate internal audits, manage insurance processes, collaboratively undertake and execute business continuity planning, and maintain key registers. This role suits someone organised and proactive with a background in risk, governance or auditing. Coordinate Internal Audits
Coordinating and supporting the delivery of Council’s internal audit program in collaboration with the Internal Auditor, in line with Victorian legislation and best practice frameworks. You’ll liaise with auditors, coordinate logistics, track audit actions, and ensure clear documentation to support accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement across Council.
Manage Risk and Insurance Processes
Oversee Council’s insurance register, assist with processing claims, and liaise with claimants and insurers to support effective risk management. Your role contributes to risk mitigation and improving Council’s ability to respond to unforeseen events.
Support Business Continuity Planning
Assist in the ongoing development, testing, and implementation of Council’s Business Continuity Plan in line with ISO 22301. Using a collaborative approach, embed continuity planning into daily practice and play an active role in executing continuity strategies to ensure the delivery of critical services during disruptions.
Maintain Governance Frameworks
Support the Governance Officer, when required, to maintain legal and compliance registers, facilitate FOI requests, , and support the review of policies and frameworks that uphold Council’s accountability.
Promote Awareness and Compliance
Prepare accurate reports, dashboards, and templates that inform decision-making for risk management. Deliver briefings and awareness sessions to build staff capability and foster a culture that values compliance, risk awareness, and good governance.

Location – Onsite
This role will require you to be onsite during working hours.
This role is primarily based onsite during standard working hours, with hybrid and work-from-home arrangements available in line with operational requirements. Flexibility to work additional hours may be required during business disruptions or emergencies, for which appropriate remuneration or time in lieu will be provided in accordance with Council policies and the applicable Enterprise Agreement.
Key Selection Criteria:
Our ideal candidate will be able to show us the following.
1. Relevant qualifications and demonstrated experience and knowledge in risk, assurance and governance: Tertiary qualification in risk management, governance, business, law, business (accounting), commerce, or a related field, and/or a minimum of two years’ relevant experience in a risk management, governance, auditing or similar role
2. Proven ability to apply risk management and governance principles, including the development, implementation, and review of policies, frameworks, and business continuity plans within a local government or similar environment
3. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills: Ability to assess complex information, identify and evaluate risks, make sound recommendations, and support continuous improvement in risk and governance practices
4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills: Well-developed verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to provide expert advice, prepare and present clear reports, and foster cooperation and engagement with staff, management, and external stakeholders
5. Organisational and project coordination skills: Demonstrated capability to plan, prioritise, and organise work both independently and in collaboration with others, manage competing demands, and coordinate projects or audits to meet deadlines and organisational objectives
6. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and learning, with a proactive approach to building knowledge and skills relevant to the role.
7. Proficient information technology, typing, and minute-taking skills: Highly developed typing skills and advanced proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications, (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, and Teams), with a demonstrated capability in using specialised systems such as organisational risk and information management platforms. Must be skilled in preparing accurate, clear, and professional meeting minutes, with a strong understanding of governance protocols and attention to detail in documenting discussions and actions.
