The role
The Gardening Assistant supports the upkeep and presentation of Council’s parks, gardens, and open spaces. Reporting to the Gardens Coordinator, the role involves hands-on horticultural maintenance, safe operation of plant and equipment, and contributing to a high standard of service delivery. You’ll work closely with team members across Council, maintain accurate records, follow all OHS requirements, and assist with safe work planning. Flexibility, teamwork, and a strong focus on safety and customer service are key to success in this role.

 

Key Aspects of the Role
• Hands-On Horticulture: Maintain and enhance garden beds, turf, trees, and park facilities to keep public spaces looking their best.
• Safe Operation: Confidently operate and maintain a variety of horticultural plant and equipment, always following OHS standards.
• Team Collaboration: Work closely with Natural Resources, Roads, and Parks & Gardens teams to deliver seamless, integrated services.
• Customer Service: Respond promptly and professionally to customer requests, ensuring high satisfaction with our parks and gardens.
• Safety Leadership: Assist in developing Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) and Traffic Control Plans (TCPs) to support safe and efficient work practices.
• Accurate Record-Keeping: Maintain precise data entry for timesheets, plant hire, and work order reporting to support smooth operations.

Key Selection Criteria
Our ideal candidate will be able to show us the following:

  1. Relevant qualifications in horticulture/gardening or a suitable combination of education, training, and practical experience.

  2. Demonstrated experience in horticultural maintenance and/or mechanical maintenance relevant to parks and gardens operations.

  3. Proven ability to follow directions and work effectively within established procedures and operational guidelines.

  4. Strong commitment to delivering high-quality work and providing responsive, courteous customer service.
